|Under the general direction of the EMS Shift Supervisor and the EMS Deputy Shift Supervisor, performs responsible technical and first line supervisory work in assisting in the supervision and training of the EMS field personnel assigned to an EMS Unit. Employees of this class also serve as paramedic when needed. Performs other work as requested.|
|ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS|
|Provides direct supervision of EMT Paramedics and EMT Intermediates in an EMS Unit on an assigned twenty-four hour shift.
Participates in orientation, training, and evaluation of new employees.
Oversees clinical performance of EMT Intermediate and EMT Paramedic student field internships.
Provides for field training and continuing education of subordinate EMS personnel assigned to the unit.
Assists the EMS Shift Supervisor in the direct supervision of patient care; also, supply and equipment inventory and vehicle preventive maintenance.
Assists the EMS Shift Supervisor in evaluating employee performances for adherence to proper EMS procedures, and with administrative duties required for the efficient management of the EMS unit.
|KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES|
|Knowledge of paraprofessional emergency medical practices and techniques of the basic and advanced life support level.
Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures sufficient to orient and train new employees.
Knowledge of an EMT Paramedic training curriculum to supervise clinical field internships.
Knowledge of supervisory procedures.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards associated with emergency medical work.
Ability to supervise the work of subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
|EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE|
|High school diploma, GED, or equivalent certificate of competency, supplemented by completion of an approved EMT Paramedic course, and one year experience in the supervision of emergency medical work.|
|Any equivalent combination of education and experience.|
|Registration as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and certification by Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Office of Public Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.|
