GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the general direction of a supervisor, performs routine, responsible work in receiving and dispatching messages. Work involves the responsibility for operating a telephone and a two-way radio transmitter to receive, record, and transmit messages and performing related clerical assignments. Work performance is reviewed through conferences, spot checks and periodic observation. Performs related duties as requested.
 
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Receives and records complaints; dispatches personnel to resolve the complaints. Monitors and records information from field personnel; inputs data into computer terminal or other data entry equipment. Locates and transmits via two-way radio information to field personnel. Contacts various agencies and authorities to notify them of accidents and other emergencies at various departments. Receives and records partial and final building, electrical, plumbing, air conditioning and heating inspections, traffic complaints regarding signal lights malfunction, signs missing or down and related matters; dispatches personnel to resolve the complaints. Establishes and modifies vehicle route schedules; maintains records of vehicle mileage and fuel usage; schedules vehicle maintenance as needed. Performs related clerical duties as needed.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the geography of the city and street system. Knowledge of telephone and radio requirements and techniques. Skill in the use of computer terminals and related data entry equipment for selected positions. Ability to prepare routine reports and records. Ability to read and interpret maps. Ability to speak clearly with a well-modulated voice, and to effectively deal with the public in a polite and positive manner. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent certificate of competency, and six months experience in dispatcher work.
 
SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Position(s) may be required to pass a typing skill test at 30 words per minute.
