|Under the general supervision of the Automotive Shop Supervisor, performs supervisory or semiskilled work in servicing or inspecting automotive equipment. Employees of this class perform duties of a Motor Vehicle Inspector. Work involves responsibility for inspecting automotive equipment and maintaining proper records as required by the Louisiana Department of Public Safety. Work is reviewed periodically while in progress and through analysis of comments and for results obtained. Performs other work as requested.|
|ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS|
|Participates in service work as necessary to the service station; when assigned to garage, assists Automotive Mechanics and parts room personnel with issuing tools, turning brake rotors and drums.
Inspects and performs minor repairs to City-Parish automobiles, light to heavy duty trucks, gradalls and any other type of motorized equipment requiring a Louisiana State Vehicle Inspection Certificate; inspects taxicabs.
Prepares and maintains all inspection records and certificates as required by law; issues inspection certificates.
Inventories all materials required to operate a Motor Vehicle Inspection facility; keeps tools clean and in proper place; maintains all equipment in proper working condition.
Maintains the tool and material room for Central Garage, including issuing of specialty tools and materials and the annual inventory of all hand tools at the garage.
Inspects and maintains automotive inspection area at the garage.
Orders supplies for shop.|
|KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES|
|Knowledge of the principles and practices of servicing, inspecting and maintaining a wide variety of light and heavy automotive equipment.
Knowledge of Louisiana Official Motor Vehicle Inspection Manual.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved in the work and the proper safety precautions.
Knowledge of municipal equipment, inventory and requisitions and computerized record systems.
Skill in the use and care of hand and machine tools employed in automotive repair and adjustment work.
Ability to keep material and work records and maintain log books and inspection certificates.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates and other employees.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to diagnose defects in automotive equipment and to apply approved techniques in remedying defects.
Ability to operate a personal computer.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.|
|EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE|
|High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, and three years of experience in the servicing and repair of automotive equipment in an automotive environment.|
|Any equivalent combination of education and experience.|
|Position(s) of this classification may require a valid Louisiana driver's license or a valid Louisiana Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A, B, or C with appropriate endorsements. If license is required, must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
Position(s) of this classification may require at the time of application, possession of a license as a certified Motor Vehicle Inspector.|
