GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of superior Library personnel, performs routine manual and clerical work in the parish library system. Work involves shelving and filing books and other library materials, and keeping shelves and files orderly. Employees of this class may assist professional and clerical personnel at the circulation desk in busy periods, and perform other routine library assignments in other library divisions as needed. Work may be performed at any of the City-Parish libraries and is subject to continuous review and close supervision. Performs other work as requested. Note: Employees within this classification are hired on a part-time basis and paid at an hourly rate.
 
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Sorts and returns books and magazines to proper locations; shelves books; refills pamphlets. Checks and packs books; opens and closes windows and shades; tidies reading rooms; turns off heat; turns out lights; and locks doors. Assists other library personnel with routine jobs in the library; may help patrons find books; assists patrons with microfilming and copy machines. Reads shelves of assigned section and replaces books in proper order under prescribed system. Keeps magazines in proper order; searches for and locates books and magazines requested by patrons and library personnel. Performs routine clerical work; performs messenger and delivery tasks; may do routine book mending work and art work. Prepares meeting rooms; straightens up work areas. Shows children's films and assists with story-time.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with library patrons and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and patrons. Ability to learn and willingness to perform assigned tasks. Ability to understand and willingness to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to push, lift, bend, and reach as needed for shelving, moving heavy boxes of books, tables for programs, etc. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of the tenth school grade.
 
SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

EXAMINATION
Entry Library Series exam required. Written examinations are available on most Tuesdays, 8:00 -8:30 am, check-in, Thursdays, *12:00 - 12:30 pm, and Fridays, (for current openings only) 8:00 -8:30 am check-in. Please call Human Resources Recruiting and Examination at 389-3132 to confirm testing dates and times. Test check-in is on a first come-first served basis. There are occasions where the test room is filled to capacity and applicants are asked to return on another day for testing. *Where written exam volume is expected to be high, check-in of applicants may begin as early as 11:30 am in order to complete the check-in process prior to the required 12:30 cut-off time.
