|Under the direction of an employee of a higher classification, performs professional supervisory library work as a section head at the Main library, as a manager of a larger or regional branch, or as an assistant to a division head. Work is performed in accordance with professional library administrative practices and procedures. General direction is exercised over professional and paraprofessional personnel. Work is reviewed through personal conferences, written reports and results obtained. Performs other work as requested.|
|ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS|
|Maintains oversight of one or more Main Library sectional operations or system-wide functions such as acquisitions, collection development and training.
Serves as the assistant to a division head; manages the division in the absence of the division head.
Manages all supervisory, reporting and building functions at a regional library.
Interviews, hires, trains, schedules and manages library staff for a regional library or within a division.
Provides patron mediation and interprets library policy.
Coordinates with other specialists to improve and introduce innovations into a division's programs.
Communicates sectional needs regarding staff, supplies and equipment to division heads.
Plans and implements community outreach and programming.
Appears in public relations activities as needed.
Oversees all aspects of meeting room use at the Main Library or at a regional library.|
|KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES|
|Knowledge of the current principles, practices and procedures of professional library science, and the ability to apply that knowledge to the system-wide selection of library materials, implementation of technology, or development of patron services.
Knowledge of print and online library reference and research materials and tools.
Knowledge of reader interest levels, books, authors and materials selection tools.
Knowledge of clerical processes, procedures and records used in a large library system.
Knowledge and skill in an online environment and standard office productivity applications.
Knowledge of circulation policies and practices and integrated library systems.
Ability to supervise, train, plan and direct the work of a large staff of professional, paraprofessional and clerical employees in a manner conducive to high morale and effective public service.
Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, to groups and to individuals.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, library patrons, professional organizations, and community groups.
Ability to resolve patron account problems.
Ability to make decisions recognizing established precedents, practices and systems, and to use resourcefulness, tact and courtesy in meeting new problems and in dealing with library staff and patrons.
Ability to use selected multimedia equipment.
Ability to push, lift, bend, and reach as needed for shelving, moving heavy boxes of books, tables for programs, etc.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.|
|EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE|
|Master's degree from an accredited school of library and information science and two years of experience in professional library work, including one year of supervisory experience.|
|Equivalent higher education from an accredited school of library and information science may substitute for work experience.|
