|Library Technician I|

|Starting Salary:||13.7722 Hourly / $28,646 Annual|
|Under the direction of a Librarian or a library technician of a higher classification, assists in professional library tasks of copy cataloging, programming, circulation and reference duties. Work involves responsibility for performing selected library tasks and related clerical duties. Work is reviewed for adherence to established practices while in progress and upon completion. Performs other work as requested.
Note: Some employees within this classification are hired on a part-time basis and paid at an hourly rate.|
|ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS|
|Responsible for opening or closing library on a rotating basis with other library personnel.
Works at the ready reference desk; answers reference phones and researches reference questions for patrons using print and online resources.
Charges and discharges books, collects fines, renews books, and registers new patrons using the library's automated circulation system; maintains daily and monthly records and statistics of library usage.
Assists or instructs school children, young adults, and the general public in the proper use of the library and library tools, including the Library's online catalog, the Internet, computer-based applications and proprietary databases.
Locates and imports bibliographic records for copy cataloging; receives and processes select print and non-print materials.
Assists readers in the selection and location of library materials; prepares materials for shelving and, as needed, shelves materials.
Prepares documents, spreadsheets and databases necessary for library functions, including fliers, statistical reports, brochures and displays for patrons.
Assists in the acquisition and processing of replacement materials and repairs damaged materials.
Assists librarians in the planning and presentation of library programs for patrons of all ages.|
|KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES|
|Knowledge of books, literature and basic reference works and resources.
Knowledge of reader interest levels, books and authors.
Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of standard library work.
Knowledge and skill in an online environment.
Ability to evaluate and interpret information obtained from online searches.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
Ability to make decisions recognizing established precedents, practices and systems, and to use resourcefulness, tact and courtesy in meeting new problems and in dealing with library patrons.
Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.
Ability to use selected multimedia equipment.
Ability to push, lift, bend, and reach as needed for shelving, moving heavy boxes of books, tables for programs, etc.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.|
|EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE|
|Bachelor's degree. |

|Professional Series written exam required. Written examinations are available on most Tuesdays, 8:00 -8:30 am, check-in, Thursdays, *12:00 - 12:30 pm, and Fridays, (for current openings only) 8:00 -8:30 am check-in. Please call Human Resources Recruiting and Examination at 389-3132 to confirm testing dates and times. Test check-in is on a first come-first served basis. There are occasions where the test room is filled to capacity and applicants are asked to return on another day for testing.
*Where written exam volume is expected to be high, check-in of applicants may begin as early as 11:30 am in order to complete the check-in process prior to the required 12:30 cut-off time.|
