|LOCATION OF WORK|
|Emergency Medical Services|
|Under the general direction of the Chief EMS Operations Officer, performs responsible technical medical work in the supervision of EMS field operations on a particular twelve hour shift. Work involves direct supervision of the department's vehicle fleet and medical supplies. Performs other work as requested.|
|ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS|
|Supervises EMT Paramedics and EMT Intermediates on an assigned twelve hour shift; serves as paramedic when needed.
Supervises central emergency medical services dispatch unit in the absence of the Chief EMS Operations Officer.
Coordinates EMS operations with existing public safety agencies; i.e., Civil Defense, private ambulance services, hospitals, and central 9-1-1 dispatch operators.
Supervises operational protocols and procedures relating to supplies, drugs, and equipment.
Supervises medical supplies, communication equipment, vehicle maintenance, scheduling of repairs, and the maintenance of communications equipment records.
Manages EMS Special Teams and special events such as large festivals and football games; responsible for coordinating vehicles, equipment, and medical coverage for such events.
Evaluates employee performances for adherence to proper EMS procedures.
|KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES|
|Knowledge of paraprofessional emergency medical practices and techniques of the basic and advanced life support level.
Knowledge of supervisory procedures.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards associated with emergency medical work.
Ability to identify emergency medical situations and to administer appropriate medical treatment in order to stabilize the patient's condition.
Ability to supervise the work of subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
|EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE|
|High school diploma, GED, or equivalent certificate of competency and completion of two years or 60 semester hours of college, supplemented by completion of an approved EMT Paramedic course, and two years experience in the supervision of emergency medical work.|
|Any equivalent combination of education and experience.|
|Registration as an Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, and certification by Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Office of Public Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.|
