GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of a Librarian, assists in professional library tasks of acquisition, circulation, adult programming, and reference duties. In addition to performing the primary duties of Library Technician I and II, a Library Technician III has duties including but not limited to supervision, management and training of library paraprofessionals of a lower classification. Work is performed under the supervision of a librarian. Performs other work as requested.
 
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
At the community library level, manages Circulation services. Attends Circulation section head meetings and resolves patron problems related to Circulation functions. Assists the branch manager in distributing and receiving meeting room applications, scheduling meetings and preparing rooms for groups and library programming. Responsible for opening or closing library on a rotating basis with other library personnel. Oversees interlibrary loan services; implements changes in policy and procedure with approval of the division head. Oversees serials subscriptions throughout the library; coordinates serials subscription services and tracking with branch technicians and Computer Division staff; advises division head in policy and procedure concerning serials. Supervises assigned personnel and assists with training of new staff. Prepares statistical reports. Plans and implements adult programming.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of books, literature and basic reference works and resources. Knowledge of reader interest levels, books and authors. Knowledge of the principals, practices and procedures of standard library work. Knowledge of circulation policies and practices and interlibrary loan policies and procedures. Knowledge of the Library's integrated library system, including the automated accounting functions. Knowledge and skill in an online environment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public. Ability to make decisions recognizing established precedents, practices and systems, and to use resourcefulness, tact and courtesy in meeting new problems and in dealing with library patrons. Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions. Ability to use selected multimedia equipment. Ability to push, lift, bend, and reach as needed for shelving, moving heavy boxes of books, tables for programs, etc. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree and three years of experience in paraprofessional library work.
 
SUBSTITUTIONS
Equivalent higher education from an accredited school of library and information science may substitute for work experience.
