|Under the direction of a higher classification, performs responsible technical work maintaining network equipment (terminals, modems, printers, wiring, multiplexors, etc.) for computer equipment. Incumbents of this class serve as installers and troubleshooters for network equipment and are required to work at various locations throughout the City-Parish. Incumbents are also on twenty-four hour call and are required to work shift work. Network Technicians II are distinguished from Network Technicians I by the exercise of added skills and the actual network preparation and installation of hardware. Performs other work as requested.|
|ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS|
|Monitors the operation of network equipment to ensure proper functioning, and to prevent damage caused by malfunctioning equipment or improper operation techniques.
Maintains a log of all network equipment breakdowns and reports the nature of the problems to outside service representatives.
Troubleshoots and replaces inoperable network equipment; relocates and installs network equipment as needed; troubleshoots data line problems.
Maintains a list and/or diagram of all network equipment, including data circuits with locations and wiring schemes and other information as deemed necessary.
Serves as a technical advisor to the management of Information Services on new network equipment; researches and tests new equipment for compatibility with existing network equipment as needed.
Repairs network equipment and personal computers as board replacements using spare parts; coordinates for the replacement of boards used.
Instructs Information Services personnel and end-users on the proper operation of network equipment. Assists Senior Network Technician in planning and wiring network needs. Runs wire as required and installs cable ends for connection to network devices (e.g. RS232, MMJ, RJ45, etc.).
Installs Network Software on PCs for end-users. Installs additional PC hardware as needed by users. Example: Network Interface Cards, hard drives, etc.
Test new technology and assist in determining if it will be useful to City-Parish government.|
|KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES|
|Knowledge of network operations and probable cause of malfunctions.
Knowledge of network protocols.
Ability to instruct personnel in the proper use of networking equipment.
Ability to use network test equipment (e.g., data scopes, data line testers, etc.) to troubleshoot malfunctions in the network.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions in resolving equipment problems.
Ability to analyze computer hardware/software/network problems, and prepare written reports on problems.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, superiors, subordinates and outside vendors.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.|
|EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE|
|High school diploma, GED, or equivalent certificate of competency, and successful completion of a vocational technical school in electronics or networking, supplemented by two years experience in personal computer network equipment maintenance and support, including one year experience in the use of Network Management Software. |
|Any equivalent combination of education and experience.|
