|Under the direction of the Director of Information Services, performs work as operator/shift supervisor in the operation of mainframe computers and the computer-assisted dispatch system utilized by the City Police, Fire, and EMS departments. Work also involves responsibility for training and instructing subordinate computer operators. Employees of this class are required to work shift work. Performs other work as requested.|
|ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS|
|Supervises a shift of subordinate computer operators in the operation of the mainframe computer and peripheral equipment.
Trains and instructs all subordinate computer operators in the operation of the mainframe computer and peripheral equipment.
Monitors the mainframe computer and peripheral equipment to ensure proper functioning; reviews all work for errors.
Answers all operator service calls; writes up service calls for vendors.
Maintains tape drives, cassette readers, printers and disk drives by cleaning and performing minor repairs.
Runs all batch reports for City-Parish agencies; separates all printed work and attaches to respective job control.
Restores data files to usable condition; loads and reloads system firmware.|
|KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES|
|Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of mainframe computers and peripheral equipment, and its application to a variety of statistical processing problems.
Knowledge of program instructions and their effect on mainframe computers.
Knowledge of elementary statistical and accounting theories, methods, and practices.
Knowledge of modern office procedures, practices, and methods.
Ability to perform routine to moderately complex operations on mainframe computers and peripheral equipment, and to make minor adjustments to the machines.
Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors and subordinates.
Ability to supervise subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

|EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE|
|High school diploma, GED, or equivalent certificate of competency, supplemented by three years experience in mainframe computer operations.|
|Any equivalent combination of education and experience.|
