Special Assistant to the Public Works Director

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the Public Works Director, performs professional and technical work in assisting the director with Department of Public Works activities. Work involves overseeing, planning and implementing special projects regarding engineering related matters; formulation, modification and improvement of polices/procedures; computerization functions and public relations. Work requires exceptional teamwork and is reviewed by results obtained. Performs other work as requested.
 
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Participates in the senior leadership team of Public Works to enhance operational efficiency, continually improve client services, and build the capability of the staff through workforce development programs. In this role, consults closely with the Public Works Director and fellow senior leadership team members. Plans, organizes and supervises the overall activities of special projects assigned by the Public Works Director. Attends staff meetings; responds to requests from the Public Works Director; signs and approves letters and memos; responds to telephone requests from the public; and maintains records and reports. Responds to inquiries and complaints whether in person, by telephone or written correspondence; resolves problems. Prepares divisional budget; reviews quarterly budget reports; approves equipment repair expenditures; assists in the formulation of long range Public Works programs.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering (civil, electrical or other) as applied to Public Works maintenance and operational activities and equipment. Knowledge of policies and procedures of the department. Ability to interpret and analyze technical and statistical information. Ability to prepare technical oral or written reports and conduct presentations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, engineers and the public. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in one of the recognized branches of engineering or business administration, and four years work experience in organizational management.
 
SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
Position(s) of this classification may require a valid Louisiana driver's license. If license is required, must maintain throughout employment in this position.
