GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the general direction of Airport Police/ARFF Chief, performs responsible supervisory work as second ranking officer of the Greater Baton Rouge Airport District. Work involves conducting the day-to-day operations of the department; assisting in the development of airport safety procedures; assigning subordinates to specific duties, and inspecting airport premises for law enforcement violations and fire safety. Incumbents may be subject to hazardous working conditions and occasionally required to work irregular hours. General supervision is exercised over Airport Police/ARFF Sergeants. This work is distinguished from that of Airport Police/ARFF Sergeant by the degree of responsibility, the assignment of some administrative duties and by the supervision exercised over the latter class. Incumbent is on twenty-four hour call. Performs other work as requested.
 
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Supervises the work of Greater Baton Rouge Airport District, Police/ARFF Division. Implements the safety and policing procedures as established by the Airport Police/ARFF Chief. Supervises and participates in the periodic inspection of airport buildings and fire hydrants, and the servicing of equipment and extinguishers; keeps up-to-date safety records of the conditions of inspections and serviceability of equipment. Performs various staff level duties, makes recommendations to the Airport Police/ARFF Chief concerning personnel and equipment needs, and assists in the preparation of the Airport Police/ARFF Division budget, annual ratings and is an alternate internal affairs officer. Acts as alternate incident commander for all police and fire incidents. Drive police unit and fire trucks to emergencies. Prepare payroll and all reports.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the rules and regulations pertaining to airport safety and policing, including applicable federal, state and local laws. Knowledge of modern techniques and equipment used in aircraft rescue-fire-fighting and structural fire fighting. Skill in the use and care of firearms. Ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully and with respect for the rights of others. Ability to perform numerous inspections and corrective action with detailed record keeping. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public. Ability to understand and follow complex, oral and written instructions. Ability to supervise subordinate employees in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale. Ability to perform strenuous work under adverse conditions using physical strength and agility. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent certificate of competency, and three years experience in aircraft rescue-fire-fighting and general law enforcement.
 
SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
Ability to obtain a law enforcement commission from the Greater Baton Rouge Airport Police/ARFF Division.
 
OTHER JOB ASPECTS
For security reasons, as per TSA provision 1542; all applicant/employees of the Greater Baton Rouge Airport District who have access to restricted areas will be required to have a ten (10) year criminal background check to the extent allowable by the law. Employees found to have an excessive criminal record or other misrepresentations of employment will not be eligible for employment.
