|Under the direction of a higher classification, performs responsible supervisory and technical work coordinating and directing various field operations within a division. Work involves supervising subordinate supervisors and other employees engaged in the performance of varied and complex construction, maintenance and repair activities. Some positions in this classification may be on 24-hour call out for emergency situations. Work is reviewed for the accomplishment of desired results through regular conferences. Performs other work as requested.|
|ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS|
|Plans, organizes and supervises a number of larger crews consisting of unskilled, semiskilled and skilled workers, heavy equipment operators and maintenance worker supervisors engaged in varied bridge, street, road, building, drainage, sewer, tree trimming and removal, and other public works maintenance, repair and construction activities on a routine basis.
Plans, organizes and supervises the work of a group of employees engaged in grass cutting and trash cleanup.
Oversees mini-dumpsites; works with the environmental section on illegal dumpsites.
Supervises the work of a crew of employees in preparing and planting bed plants; maintains inventory of all plant stock.
Reviews work of subordinate maintenance worker supervisors and workers and advises them on unusual projects, procedures and practices; interprets policies for subordinates.
Inspects and recommends the acceptance or rejection of subdivision improvements.
Makes daily check of equipment for maintenance.
Receives, analyzes and remedies or rejects complaints and requests of contractors, property owners and the general public.
Estimates amount of materials, cost and other needs and reports to the superintendents; keeps necessary records and prepares required reports.|
|KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES|
|Knowledge of the materials, methods, techniques, tools, and equipment used in street, road, bridge, sewer, drainage, tree trimming and removal, building and allied construction, maintenance and repair work.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the safe conduct of heavy manual work and equipment operation.
Knowledge of the trades and of automotive equipment and its operation and maintenance.
Knowledge of the DEQ and EPA guidelines.
Knowledge of engineering maps and records.
Ability to plan, organize, supervise and coordinate the work of several work crews engaged in a wide variety of complex maintenance, construction and repair activities.
Ability to make decisions recognizing established precedents and practices, and to use resourcefulness and tact in meeting new problems.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, subordinates and the general public contacted in the course of the work.
Ability to understand, follow and work from a wide variety of plans, maps, blueprints and other written material and oral orders.
Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.|
|EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE|
|High school diploma, GED, HiSET, or equivalent certificate of competency, and three years of experience in public works construction, maintenance, or operational activities.|
|Any equivalent combination of education and experience.|
|Position(s) of this classification may require a valid Louisiana driver's license or a valid Louisiana Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A, B, or C with appropriate endorsements. If license is required, must be maintained throughout employment in this position.
Position(s) of this classification may require attainment of a Class IV Wastewater Collection Certificate issued by the Louisiana State Department of Health.|
