GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the general direction of a supervisor, performs highly responsible complex and specialized work in the collection, assembly and evaluation of numerical data for individual study; the preparation of narrative statements summarizing and or interpreting statistical data; and developing and gathering statistical data for analysis and summation of the Police Department's efforts at fighting crime. Work involves preparing, evaluating and projecting statistical data as it relates to crime as well as researching and studying crime stat patterns. Work is performed with considerable independence and is evaluated through conferences, reports and results obtained. Performs other work as requested.
 
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Collects, compiles, interprets, analyzes and evaluates statistical data related to departmental operations. Composes and prepares preliminary reports and makes recommendations based on complex mathematical analyses with the highest statistical validity. Plans, conducts and prepares special research projects as requested by superiors. Performs UCR compilation and verification; uses cross-tabs and frequency tables; develops statistical studies. Participates in trend evaluation and long-range forecasting based on statistical analysis. Plans the design and implementation of computer assisted inferential and/or descriptive statistical studies using methods such as linear and multiple regression, time series, analysis or variance, frequency distribution and non-parametric analyses. Prepares statistical analysis, narratives, tables and charts to plot trends. Gathers, organizes, analyzes, and interprets data by applying statistical principles and independent judgment to determine trends and economic conditions.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of modern budgeting and statistical methods and techniques, statistical data collection and mathematical treatment of data. Knowledge of design and development of revised management and budget procedures. Skill in the operation and care of calculators, personal computers and other office machines used in connection with the preparation of statistical data. Ability to define data requirements, research, gather and validate information applying judgment and statistical tests. Ability to evaluate implementation and effectiveness of research. Ability to design and conduct surveys and program evaluations of limited difficulty. Ability to prepare, organize and present effective clear and concise oral and written reports. Ability to summarize and analyze data, management problems and procedures. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, department heads, and other officials. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in public or business administration or a related field, and two years experience in progressively responsible positions involving statistical compilation and analysis.
 
SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
