GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Under the general direction of a technical superior, performs supervisory work in directing the repair and maintenance of automotive and related equipment. Work involves responsibility for diagnosing, assigning and supervising the repair and maintenance of general and special purpose automotive equipment. Work assignments arise in the form of oral instructions or written orders setting forth a complaint with respect to the operating conditions of the equipment. Supervision is exercised over a large staff of skilled and semiskilled mechanics. Work is reviewed by observing the effectiveness of results accomplished. Performs other work as requested.
 
ESSENTIAL WORK TASKS
Supervises and participates in general overhaul and repair work on automobiles, light and heavy trucks, gasoline and diesel motors and other components of tractors, bulldozers, graders, mowers and other automotive and mechanical equipment. Diagnoses trouble with equipment and assigns job to a mechanic; adjusts work assignments to maximize availability of personnel for priority repairs. Obtains estimates of repairs from outside vendors. Ensures compliance with safety standards. Inspects completed work and test drives equipment to assure its readiness. Requisitions parts and supplies needed for repair work; maintains required equipment, material and labor records.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment and maintenance of a wide variety of automotive equipment, including automobiles, light and heavy trucks and construction equipment. Knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel powered equipment and of the methods used in the repair of a variety of such equipment. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Skill in the use and care of hand and machine tools employed in automotive repair and adjustment work. Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of a large group of skilled journeymen and helpers and to instruct them in their work. Ability to maintain accurate and complete equipment records. Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems. Ability to diagnose defects in automotive equipment and to apply approved techniques. Ability to apply good work habits such as punctuality, reliability, preciseness, and dependability in order to effectively complete assigned tasks and contribute to the smooth operation of the department and division.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma, GED or equivalent certificate of competency, and five years journeyman level experience as an automotive mechanic.
 
SUBSTITUTIONS
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
Certification by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (NIASE) in two (2) areas of automotive or medium/heavy truck areas. Must have a valid Louisiana Commercial Driver's license (CDL) Class A, B, or C with appropriate endorsements at the time of appointment and maintain throughout employment in this classification.
