Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee

Established in 2000 by the Capital Region Planning Commission, this group provides an active living initiative from an established, goal orientated group of citizens representing professionals and organizations for the Baton Rouge metropolitan area. This group provides a mechanism that enables citizens, who represent the ultimate consumers of the product, to input their concerns about facilities that are desirable and usable. Projects include addressing problems with existing facilities, education of bike riders, pedestrians and motorists on safety issues and the Baton Rouge Area Bike Map.

The committee has representatives from various City-Parish, state agencies and other local advocacy groups including:

Baton Rouge Planning Commission,

Baton Rouge Recreation and Parks Commission,

Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development,

Alliance for Healthy Transportation,

Sierra Club

Meeting Information
The Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee meets the second Thursday each month at 5:30 p.m. at:

Capital Region Planning Commission

Horizon Plan
The Horizon Plan is the comprehensive land use and development plan for Baton Rouge. The transportation element of the Horizon Plan specifically addresses the alternative transportation needs of the Parish through a variety of goals:

Goal T5
The overall transportation system should be designed to include mass transit, carpools, bicycles, and pedestrians, and encourage the use of these alternative modes of travel to support a balanced transportation system.

Goal T8
The City-Parish should plan to develop bikeways and pedestrian trails to foster alternative modes of transportation for commuting as well as recreational purposes.

Goal T9
The City-Parish should provide safe and convenient facilities for pedestrian movement in new and existing urban areas.
