Myriam’s House provides shelter and services to assist single indigent women
in identifying and combating personal, psychological, financial and societal
barriers. The homeless population served is often hard-to-reach unaccompanied
homeless women who are long-term homeless, under-educated, ex-offenders,
prostitutes, substance abusers and/or victims of domestic violence desiring a
different way of life. Women are often not readily employable. Under the
Supportive Housing Program, the aim of the project is to promote and stabilize
these women into becoming self-sufficient in order to acquire permanent housing.
The Residential Outreach for Women Program (R.O.W.) provides expanded services
to homeless single women for 14 weeks as they receive essential vocational
assessment, career counseling, job training, placement and stabilization. The
program serves 27 women a year who are provided with 2 weeks of financial
support while searching for a job. SHP funds provide for assistance with
supportive services expenses. Residential services provided under the SHP
include, but are not limited to: “start-up” food and clothing, counseling,
development of life management skills, assistance with obtaining a GED,
vocational assessment, substance abuse recovery support, and locating permanent
housing. Grant funds were awarded under the 2000 SHP for three years of
operation and delivery of services.
