"Building Homes, Building Lives, Building Communities"
Habitat for Humanity is a world-wide, not-for-profit Christian housing ministry. It's mission is to eliminate poverty housing from the world by building decent, safe, and affordable homes. Habitat for Humanity has been in Greater
Baton Rouge since 1989 and has built 120 homes. Habitat works in partnership with deserving low-income families and businesses, corporations, churches, organizations, and individuals to eliminate poverty housing in our area and to
make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.
Houses are sold to those in need—our partner families—at no profit and with no interest charged on the mortgages. Partner families invest hundreds of hours of their own labor— “sweat equity” - into building their home and the homes
of others. Their monthly mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to further the mission and build more houses. A typical Habitat house has three bedrooms and one bathroom, and is about 1,100 square feet.
After taking ownership, Habitat homeowner’s lives are transformed. They become stronger members of society and make a positive difference in their community. Children often do better in school, health problems improve, employment
situations improve and adults complete their education. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge builds communities and revitalizes neighborhoods.
