Background Information
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
defines brownfields, as real property, the expansion, redevelopment,
or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence
of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. The concept of the
Baton Rouge Brownfields Program began in 1992 with the adoption of the
Horizon Plan, the City Parish comprehensive plan. In October 2000, the
City Parish was awarded a $200,000 EPA Brownfields Assessment Demonstration
Pilot Grant. Since this initial funding, the Baton Rouge Brownfields
Program has acquired over $500,000 in grant funding for the redevelopment of
eligible sites in East Baton Rouge Parish.
The goal of the Baton Rouge Brownfields Program is to foster the
redevelopment of brownfields in Baton Rouge, thereby generating a positive
force for the redevelopment abandoned commercial and industrial properties.
Is My Site Eligible?
