EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH "LOCAL" SALES/USE TAX
FILING EXTENSIONS ASSOCIATED WITH
HURRICANE GUSTAV
Baton Rouge area businesses, as well as governmental entities in the area,
were all directly affected by Hurricane Gustav. The governmental entities in
East Baton Rouge Parish are determined to provide the essential governmental
services for the citizens of this community. The Fire, Police, Public Works,
and School Systems in the Parish are all supported by the monthly sales tax
remittances. We are asking all businesses that are capable to make a
determined effort to remit their taxes timely. Timely remittances ensure
that these governmental entities can continue to provide needed services.
For those businesses that cannot file timely because of this hurricane, we
are offering an extension.
East Baton Rouge Parish governmental entities are granting a sales/use tax
filing and payment extension to those taxpayers whose business or tax
preparer is located in any of the “disaster areas” declared by President
Bush due to Hurricane Gustav. The extension is available for local sales/use
tax collected in August 2008, due on September 1, 2008, and considered
delinquent after September 20, 2008. The delinquent date for these taxes has
been extended through October 15, 2008.
The Parish Sales/Use Tax Administrator will not assess late penalties and
interest that would otherwise apply during this period. Any return or amount
on which penalty or interest began accruing for prior period tax returns
(returns due before September 20, 2008) will not be eligible for this
relief.
When filing a tax return that qualifies for this extension, taxpayers should
write the words “Hurricane Gustav” in black ink on the top of the return.
The tax return filing extensions apply only to those taxpayers and
businesses located in any of the “disaster areas” declared by President
Bush.
Please note that these terms can only be directly applied to paper returns
filed with this office. Taxpayers in the qualified areas are urged to file
paper returns after September 20, 2008, for August 2008 returns. Any returns
filed electronically will be assessed interest and penalties after September
20, 2008. Qualified taxpayers should contact the Revenue Division if they
are erroneously assessed interest and penalties.
We appreciate your cooperation with this issue and ask that you please file
timely if possible. Any questions can be addressed to the Finance
Department/Revenue Division at 225-389-3084.
